A barred spiral galaxy, classified SB is a spiral-galaxy with a central bar-shaped structure as the galactic-core composed of old stars.
Examples[edit | edit source]
The Milky Way, which the Sun and earth are in, is a barred spiral galaxy.
Some face-on barred spiral galaxies are ngc-4921, ngc-1073, m91, m95, and ugc-12158.
Classification[edit | edit source]
The classification for barred spiral galaxies is SB (spiral, barred).
There are 6 subtypes:
- SBa has tightly bound spiral-arms
- SBb, SBc, and SBd have increasingly looser arms
- SB0 is a barred lenticular-galaxy
- SBm is a magellanic-spiral - a barred irregular-galaxy
While the last 2 aren't spiral galaxies, they are still considered as barred spiral galaxies. Template:Wr
